Survey Crew Chief

LOCATION: Oklahoma City, OK

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time

COMPENSATION: $45,500.00 - $95,000.00 annually, based on experience and qualifications

JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced Crew Chief to join our growing Survey team. This position provides leadership to field survey crews while performing a variety of surveying projects, including transportation, boundary, ALTA, topographic, utility, construction layout, and control surveys. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and committed to delivering accurate, high-quality survey data while maintaining strong communication with clients and team members.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and direct field survey crews to complete projects safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

  • Ensure project hours remain within planned budgets.

  • Communicate with the survey team to ensure a thorough understanding of daily project objectives before departing the office.

  • Perform survey research through government agencies, including plats and deed research.

  • Interpret project data, maps, deeds, blueprints, aerial photography, and construction documents.

  • Communicate professionally with clients, property owners, contractors, and the general public.

  • Prepare accurate field notes, sketches, timekeeping, and project billing documentation.

  • Perform complex surveying calculations using Coordinate Geometry (COGO) software.

  • Operate GPS equipment, total stations, digital and conventional levels, and data collectors.

  • Utilize engineering and surveying software to prepare field data for CAD processing.

  • Perform quality control on survey work completed under your supervision and license, and assist with quality reviews on other projects as needed.

  • Maintain proficiency in surveying methods, technology, and industry best practices through continuing education.

  • Recommend improvements to survey procedures, equipment, and field operations.

  • Complete responsibilities in accordance with the company's Quality Manual.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years of land surveying experience.

  • Experience with highway/DOT, bridge, boundary, ALTA, topographic, aerial ground control, construction layout, utility, and horizontal/vertical control surveys.

  • Proficient with data collectors, conventional field notes and sketches, total stations, leveling, and accurate field reporting.

  • Proficient with GPS equipment, total stations, conventional and digital levels, COGO calculations, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MicroStation/OpenRoads, and survey drafting technologies.

  • Experience preparing survey drawings and performing GPS post-processing, error analysis, and corrections.

  • Knowledge of Trimble survey equipment and software.

  • Ability to operate motorized equipment.

  • Ability to work extended hours outdoors in varying weather conditions and around traffic.

  • Ability to travel for out-of-town projects.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of computer-aided drafting principles.

  • Knowledge of land surveying principles, basic civil engineering practices, and construction procedures.

  • Must successfully pass a background check in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive experience with Trimble survey equipment and software.

  • Demonstrated experience performing DOT, ALTA, Boundary, and Topographic surveys.

  • Ability to calculate boundaries and construction layouts.

  • Ability to resolve boundary issues in the field.

  • Ability to calculate construction layout points from PDF and CAD drawings.

  • Working knowledge of Land Survey Law and its practical application.

  • Continuing education in Land Surveying or active pursuit of a Land Surveying degree with the intent to obtain Professional Surveyor licensure.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Primarily works outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, uneven terrain, and traffic.

  • Frequently sits, talks, and hears.

  • Occasionally stands, walks, reaches, kneels, crouches, crawls, and uses hands to operate equipment.

  • Frequently lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.

  • Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
