JOB SUMMARY:
MacArthur Associated Consultants is seeking a Survey Instrument Technician to join our growing Survey team. In this role, you will assist the Survey Crew Chief with a variety of field survey operations, supporting transportation, boundary, topographic, construction staking, and other surveying projects. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and eager to develop their surveying knowledge while working in a collaborative, field-based environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Survey Crew Chief in performing field surveys safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

  • Operate a variety of survey equipment, including GPS units, total stations, and data collectors.

  • Assist with surveying calculations using Coordinate Geometry (COGO) software.

  • Communicate with the Survey Crew Chief to ensure project tasks are completed accurately and efficiently.

  • Develop a thorough understanding of daily project objectives before departing the office.

  • Prepare accurate field notes and sketches for assigned survey projects.

  • Maintain and organize survey equipment, ensuring it remains in good working condition.

  • Report equipment damage or maintenance needs that could affect survey accuracy.

  • Ensure survey equipment is charged, calibrated, and prepared for daily use.

  • Maintain the survey crew vehicle with the tools, materials, and supplies necessary to complete assigned projects.

  • Continue developing proficiency in surveying methods, technologies, and industry best practices through training and continuing education.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to operate handheld computers, survey instruments, and motorized equipment.

  • Ability to troubleshoot survey equipment in the field.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to recognize conditions that may affect survey accuracy.

  • Excellent verbal communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret maps, construction documents, and field instructions.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently when needed.

  • Ability to work extended hours outdoors in varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and around traffic.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two or more years of progressive field experience as a Survey Instrument Technician.

  • Associate degree in Land Surveying or a related field.

  • Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) certification or active pursuit of Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure.

  • Experience with Topcon and Trimble GPS equipment, total stations, and TDS software.

  • Experience performing transportation (ODOT), ALTA, construction staking, and topographic surveys.

  • Experience in preparing and organizing field books.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Desire to grow into a Survey Crew Chief or Professional Land Surveyor role.
